The importance of the cross

This study was taught at our Sunday evening service by Sim Forder, one of our pastors, on the 4th April 2021. You can listen to the audio on this web page or save it for later listening.

In this study we considered how the cross should, beyond merely reminding us of Jesus’ crucifixion, cause us to be appalled, comforted and motivated.

Appalled by how horrific our sin is, that it required such sacrifice by Jesus. Comforted that Jesus has paid for all of our sin (we are saved by grace). And motivated to avoid sin at all costs, serve at any cost, and love others at any cost.

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

1 John 3:1-3

Sin is the most expensive thing in the universe. Nothing else can cost so much.

Charles Finney

I cannot trifle with the evil that killed my best Friend. I must be holy for his sake. How can I live in sin when He has died to save me from it?

Charles Spurgeon
