Romans 1:18-32

This study is part of our series of verse by verse studies of Romans, the 45th book in the Bible. Taught by our pastor, Simeon Forder, at our Sunday morning service on the 5th February 2023.

About this book

This letter from Paul to the church in Rome is one of his longest (only 1 Corinthians being similar in length), and in it we find the basis of much if not all Christian doctrine. Considered a literary masterpiece, even by some non-Christians, this letter describes the human condition of sin, our need for salvation, and the way in which we can be saved – through faith alone in God alone. But further, it explains Israel’s place in Christian teaching, and overs multiple chapters dedicated to Christian living.

About this study

Having opened chapter 1 with his introduction that spoke of grace, peace, prayer for those in Rome, a desire to be a blessing to them, and a gospel that he was unashamed of, Paul then begins laying the foundation for the subsequent chapters – that we are all sinners in need of God’s grace. In other words, the gospel is for everyone, for everyone needs the gospel. With almost 30 different sins listed here, Paul shows how far mankind has fallen, having turned our backs on our Creator: God.

Application questions

  • Do you in any way worship the creature more than the Creator?
  • Are there things you watch, read or listen to that normalise or glorify sin?
