This study is part of our series of verse by verse studies of Genesis, the 1st book in the Bible. Taught by our pastor, Simeon Forder, at our Sunday morning service on the 27th August 2023.
About this book
Genesis is the first book in the Bible, and in its more than 1500 verses, there are over 50 prophecies, 100+ commands, over 70 promises, and almost 100 distinct messages from God. As well as recording the firsts of so many things — including the first marriage, sin, child, murder, death, laughs, tears — this book also explains God’s established order in all things; from creation to Israel, marriage to tithing, and all before the law is even mentioned. But ultimately, this book points to Jesus as our Saviour, not only in obvious ways, but in its smaller details too.
About this study
In chapter 7 we get to the record of Noah’s flood, and while this is a factual account of what happened over 4000 years ago, there is also application for how we live today. First, we see how Noah (and it seems his family) lived righteously in their generation – so the question is, do we? We also see how Noah led his family onto the ark – which should prompt Christian fathers to consider their responsibilities to lead their families spiritually. And we should all consider how needful it is for us to be preachers of righteousness, as Noah was, to those around us – that they may come to know Jesus as their Saviour.
Application questions
- What does it mean to live righteously before God in this generation? What does the Bible say?
- Are you obeying God in all He has commanded you to do?
- When people mock your faith; are you confrontational, or are you moved with compassion?
- Are you leading and teaching your children about the Lord as you ought to do?
