Simply teaching the Bible, simply

Genesis 37:1-36

This study is part of our series of verse by verse studies of Genesis, the 1st book in the Bible. Taught by our pastor, Simeon Forder, at our Sunday morning service on the 12th May 2024.

About this book

Genesis is the first book in the Bible, and in its more than 1500 verses, there are over 50 prophecies, 100+ commands, over 70 promises, and almost 100 distinct messages from God. As well as recording the firsts of so many things — including the first marriage, sin, child, murder, death, laughs, tears — this book also explains God’s established order in all things; from creation to Israel, marriage to tithing, and all before the law is even mentioned. But ultimately, this book points to Jesus as our Saviour, not only in obvious ways, but in its smaller details too.

About this study

This chapter marks the start of the final section of this book, focussing on a man called Joseph who we read was a man of impeccable character. However, that character wasn’t only shown in the good times, but in the bad, as even at a young age Joseph is on the wrong end of his brother’s sin. But as we look at the horrors of sin in this family, we need to be careful to not forget that these things are written down for us to learn from, that we may also live our lives in a way pleasing to God.

Application questions

  • Do you show favouritism or partiality in your home, or in your church?
  • Are you letting hate, envy, or bitterness fester in your heart?
  • Are you still holding a grudge against anyone?
  • And given how Joseph points to Jesus in so many ways, how much do you point to Jesus?
