Genesis 28:1-22

This study is part of our series of verse by verse studies of Genesis, the 1st book in the Bible. Taught by our pastor, Simeon Forder, at our Sunday morning service on the 3rd March 2024.

About this book

Genesis is the first book in the Bible, and in its more than 1500 verses, there are over 50 prophecies, 100+ commands, over 70 promises, and almost 100 distinct messages from God. As well as recording the firsts of so many things — including the first marriage, sin, child, murder, death, laughs, tears — this book also explains God’s established order in all things; from creation to Israel, marriage to tithing, and all before the law is even mentioned. But ultimately, this book points to Jesus as our Saviour, not only in obvious ways, but in its smaller details too.

About this study

Continuing straight on from the prior chapter, we see Isaac instructs Jacob as to who he should marry, and Jacob sets off to Rebekah’s family to find a wife. But looking on, Esau want’s the same favour to be shown from Isaac, and so tries to emulate, without acknowledging his previous errors. There’s challenge for us in this, however as we then see Jacob take his journey, there is incredible comfort offered not only to Jacob, but to us also, as we recognise we are all beneficiaries of God’s grace, and He will continue to work in our lives until the day we are with Him in Heaven.

Application questions

  • Are you more interested in being blessed by God, than obeying Him?
  • Will you respond to God’s grace with apathy, or worship?
  • Will you give to God out of that which He has given you?
