Exodus 5:1-7:7

This study is part of our series of verse by verse studies of Exodus, the 2nd book in the Bible. Taught by our pastor, Simeon Forder, at our Sunday morning service on the 25th October 2026.

About this book

The book of Exodus is more than just a historical account — it is an essential read for every believer. But Why? Well, first it shows us God kept His promises regarding Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob’s descendants. That indeed He would make a great nation of them while they were in Egypt. It also shows us God’s strength, and protective nature in bringing His people out of slavery. And third we can learn much from Moses’ and Israel’s behaviour that so often mirrors our own. But also, in it we see the law given, not to save us, but to show us how very much we need a Saviour.

About this passage

In chapter five we read of Moses and Aaron’s first encounter with Pharaoh, and it doesn’t go well, with Pharaoh reacting by worsening the conditions for the children of Israel. And therefore, the officers of the people, having learnt of why Pharaoh had done this, choose to blame Moses, who in turn seeks answers from God. And God is not silent. For in chapter six, we see that He assures Moses that He will save His people. Moses then records his and Aaron’s lineage, for good reason, and this chapter ends, and the next one begins with God confirming that Aaron will be Moses’ spokesman, just as he had told Moses back in Midian.
