This study is part of our series of verse by verse studies of Revelation, the 66th book in the Bible. Taught by our pastor, Simeon Forder, at our Sunday morning service on the 8th February 2026.
About this book
The book of Revelation is often neglected, sometimes feared, but God told the apostle John to write these things down to encourage, not discourage believers. In it we not only learn more our about our Saviour, Jesus, and His righteousness, but also what He expects from the believers that make up His church (the bride of Christ). Furthermore, we gain incredible insight as to how God will not only see that justice is done as He deals with a wicked world, but the joys that await those that love Him. And if there was any further encouragement needed to study it, we are promised that there is a blessing for all who read and hear the words of this book!
About this passage
This chapter can be split it into two halves, with the first 7 verses dealing with a question that brings John to tears — which is who is worthy to open the scroll that he sees in God holding in His hand? And we find that he is moved tears that no-one is found worthy. That is, until we reach verses 6 & 7 where we find that there is One who can, who is Jesus, the Lamb of God.
And as we read verses 8-14 we find that all of heaven erupts into praise and worship of the Lamb, with the church worshipping her Lord like never before. And so let us not forget that this is us we reading about here! That is, if you know Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, then this is the joy that awaits you. A joy like nothing else. And so we should have a great deal of excitement as we read these things.
Application questions
- Have you grasped how serious our sin is before God? (not one was found worthy)
- Is your worship God-focussed, or self-focussed? (not just about lyrics, but your heart too)
- Are you worshipping God with the enthusiasm He deserves? (He is the only One who is worthy!)
