This study is part of our series of verse by verse studies of Esther, the 17th book in the Bible. Taught by Simeon Forder at our Sunday evening service on the 6th November 2022.
About this book
Esther records the incredible deliverance of the Jews during their Babylonian captivity, which is still celebrated today in the feast of Purim. While this book of the Bible is unusual, in that God is not directly mentioned, in it we see God’s providence in arranging the circumstances for their deliverance, and examples – good and bad – in the characters we follow there.
About this study
Following the news of Haman’s plot (in chapter 3) to exterminate all the Jews in the kingdom, Mordecai weeps. Esther enquires as to why, and is not only informed of the details, but encouraged to speak to the king on the matter. That act is not so simple though, as going to the king unannounced could lead to her death. But her cousin, Mordecai, points out that perhaps she has ended up exactly where she is as queen for this moment. The application for us is to recognise that God may also have put us exactly where we are in life for a specific purpose.
Application questions
- Do you understand the seriousness of your sin? Do you mourn over it?
- Why has God placed you where you are right now?
- What are you willing to give up for for the sake of serving Him?
