Advent calendar: Day 21 – Herod

The Christmas story is certainly one of joy, and good news. But there is one dark moment should still cause us to shudder — and that is how King Herod, having been informed of Jesus birth, and realising that the wise men had not returned to tell him the exact location of it, ordered all the male babies under 2 years old to be slaughtered — both in Bethlehem and all its districts. Why did he do this?

Well, tragically, Herod was moved with fear — fear that if this baby, Jesus, was allowed to grow and be king, then that would mean he would no longer be king. And today, many are fearful of the same thing — that surrendering their lives to Jesus will mean that they will no longer be king of their own lives. But as with Herod, that’s a foolish endeavour, that will not only hurt us, but hurt others too.
