At the time Jesus was born, shepherds were considered dirty, even the outcasts of society – yet they were the first to hear the news of Jesus’ birth, and the first to go see Him. Why? Well, documented evidence shows us that these particular shepherds were not ordinary shepherds nor were they ordinary sheep. These particular shepherds were employed by the priests in Jerusalem and they wrapped their new born lambs in swaddling clothes so they were without spot or blemish because they were to be sacrificed at Passover as covering for the sins of the people. The reward for their diligence was that they were to be the first to witness the arrival of the ultimate Sacrificial Lamb who would later die for the sins of all who would come to Him.
