If you’re like me, one of the things I look forward to at Christmas is the traditional Christmas carols – on the radio, in the shops, and in church of course. Many faithfully capture the events of that first Christmas with beautiful words and imagery. I’m less moved by those that have no basis in the Bible at all though — talking about snow, or an innkeeper, or 3 kings — but we shouldn’t get hung up on the singing (or not) of any particular carol. It would be far more sad to miss the real inspiration behind all those carols, the reason they were written in the first place – to sing of all that God did in sending Jesus to earth for us?! This Christmas, in our enjoyment of all that goes with the season, let’s make sure we don’t miss Jesus at the heart of it all – which means we can sing as the angels did that first Christmas “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”.
